I was shopping at Costco and saw a beer brand that was new to me. It was Full Sail beer. I new I saw that brand name somewhere else but did not recall where it was!!!. Finally I recalled where that was and basically the brand name is also that of a very famous and recognized arts and design school for the 21st century in Orlando, Fl where fellow blogger and content strategist Manuel Hernandez from AskManny works!!!

The fun part is that at the full sail brewery site they have a section called ASK JAMIE!!

The only great movie that I saw this past Summer

The summer went by and with it one of the worst seasons that I recall to actually go to the movies. The superheroes movies did not deliver and even Pixar's Cars although was very good it was sub par with the rest of the animation powerhouse portfolio to date.

Only one movie did it for me and it was Little Miss Sunshine. One of those movies that you go without any expectations and once 15 min into the movie you realize that you are in front of something really, really special. The script, the silences, the performances, the casting, the music, the "bus". A clear example that to make great movies you don't need millions of dollars to make let alone to advertise it.

So far Little Miss Sunshine is the best movie of 2006.

- Arcade Fire: Funeral
The most notorious band from the revamped and hyped Montreal scene. As original as It can be, a unique sound filled with one too many influences.

- The Magic Numbers: The Magic Numbers
ABBA meets the 21st. century. A refreshing and easy listening debut so simple yet deeply compose of musical arrangements that makes singing along quite an experience.

- Surfjan Stevens: Illinoise
An ode to real music making. I am hooked for the rest of the states of the Union.

- Sigur Ros: Takk
The soundtrack of my next life.

- Clap your hands say yeah - Clap your hands say yeah
The most original yet ripped off sound of 2005. This brooklyn guys are messing up with my head as we speak...wiht my yellow country teeth.....!!!

- The New Pornographers- Twin Cinema
This is POP rock as good as it gets. Vancouver did not stayed behind.

- Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock and Roll
The best raw sound of simple R&R there is. One of the coolest frontmans (lead vocalist) I have seen in a while.

- Kaiser Chiefs - Employment
I predict a...revival of the britpop.

- Antony & The Johnsons - I Am a Bird Now
It was hard for me to understand Antony. At 1st I was just in a WTF state. I gave a try and it just clicked. Antony just elevates music to another level, I can nit explain.

-LCD Soundsytem - LCD Soundsystem
They are playing in my house.... my house. This is what happens when you let a really creative producer play alone with his cd collection and toys.

I was not able to go a Morrissey concert since I had a business trip. That was a real pitty.

Well I just hope 2005 to be as good as 2004.

Amigos Invisibles among Amazon's Latin Music TOP 5 Best of 2004

So I guess this year was a good for Los Amigos Invisibles. Their latest CD got pretty much good reviews from the media, performed at one of the finest music festivals in the US (Austin City Limits) and now they are selected by the pool of Amazon critics as the Latin 5th best CD of 2004. i

What about that? I guess that will imply some extra copies sold by those waiting for those lists to buy whatever good CD they missed during the year.

Needless to say that if you are willing to push the envelope and try new things (musically that is...) I suggest you to give a try to this CD, it will take you to different, distant, warmer places and is a good way to forget is winter time.

I am country sick

I just do not why? But tonight I am missing Venezuela. Not my hometown, not my friends, not the weather, I just miss a state of mind, a state of mind called Venezuela.

I feel like a junkie that need a fix of his "drug du jour", only for a minute, just a small dose. There is no explanation, there is no substitute, I need the smell, the colors, I need the attitude and the whole experience of walking and breathing in Venezuela.

Why I feel like this? Why today? I don't have an answer, but I actually I do have many questions.

Questions that I will keep to myself because sadly as of today there is not a living person that could answer them, questions related to the fate of a nation and an entire generation (gen X) of Venezuelans.

I hope I can live to tell my grandchildren why in the past I left their country (Venezuela) in order to avoid living under some experiment an experiment gone bad.

I was having my regular round of web browsing when I found this particular blog and I started to think... what could happen if the neo dictatorship of the Venezuelan regime decides that web content should be filtered, centralized and censored?. Will they go to a blogger house and arrest him? Will they start to control the ISP's and filter the Internet? Will they control who is "eligible" to have internet access?

All of this arises even more when I read that in the 21st. century the Venezuelan government announces the creation of a state operated Telecommunications company aimed to provide fixed telephone and Internet access. Is this the 1st. step of a macro plan to build infrastructure and in the future rule out private owned telecommunications companies by decree? Is this a way to fortify the power and involvement of the state in everyday life?

This is the only logic I find to this initiative. Well I guess I find a second one.

Since the government used a private telecom's network to connect all the voting machines during the last referendum and some evidence is being presented that there was two way communication between the data center and the machines making it very possible to changes in the software and final results. Don't you think it would be easier if you could have control over the whole process and rig an election freely without any private party questioning what kind of data goes through your network?.

What the bloggers in Iran are living is frightening, I hope we all learn from their experiences.

After reading opinion articles from Venezuelan "intellectuals", I am concluding that the in your face fraud truly disarmed the opposition. They even are looking (an believing) logical explanations on why maybe there was no fraud.

The fact is that we are dealing with a group of people that killed in the past in order to gain and maintain power. Do you really think that people that their entire lives have been involved creating conspiracy plots to overthrow elected governments are now the greatest democrats? People that are directly engaged with Mr. Fidel Castro are now going to bring you clean and shine elections? A group of people that in 6 years have amassed billions of dollars managing the largest corruption scheme for a country in Latin America are not going to "invest" in rigging an election electronically?

Is just plain stupid.

The thing that gets me the most is the fact that Chavez was able to maintain acceptance levels in Venezuela above 35% before going into the Referedum. That simple thing help raise the doubts that a fraud ever existed. I know the fraud did happened, that I know for sure.

I see it very difficult that in the next election (2006) a person can defeat Hugo Chavez. If with an election of a YES or a NO the opposition was not able to prevent a flagrant abuse of power and manipulation of the voting machines and win straight and square, how they will do it with a candidate that is exposed to direct attacks from the government?

As of today I do not see a leader that can challenge Mr. Chavez's charisma and charm with the popular masses. I know that person exist, and is somewhere in Venezuela right know, his turn to be in the spotlight is yet to be seen.

This is by any account the 1st. public thing that Chavez manages that actually works, a high tech coup d'etat.

I just arrived from Houston. I voted to recall Mr. Hugo Chavez from the Venezuelan Presidency.

It was quite a surprise. The last time they held an election at the Venezuelan consulate in Houston there were around 300 voters. Today the number raised to around 2.5K voters!!!. Quite a turnaround.

The tendency is to almost 90 to 10 in favor of revoking the mandate to the former paratrooper that destroyed the Venezuelan way of life in no less than 6 years in power.

Whatever today's outcome you can tell there is a profound change in the minds of the average venezuelan, this country is not going to be the same starting tomorrow.

Life has changed 180 degrees

It has been a month since I started working for the other big blue. One of the things I hate is that I can not post from work. I can see my blog, but can't go ahead an login into Blogger. The company labeled Blogger as a "Chat"web site. Sad.

The hotel that I am using is very decent but so far does not have high speed internet, so I opened a AOL account to get 50 days of free access. Sadly the dial up connection gets disconnected every 15 to 20 minutes or so...so it is very painful, is like living in 1998 all over again.

Let me tell you, using dial up has prevented me for actually posting. I am thinking about finally buy one Wi-Fi card for my laptop and visit a Starbucks that is not that far from the Hotel.

On the weekends I have to say, I am not in the mood to post, I rather sleep a lot in MY BED and enjoy some quality time with MY COUCH.

I just saw Spider Man 2. It is by far the greatest comic book based film of all times. I felt like a child jumping, laughing and cheering in my seat.

What an accomplishment in every cinematic sense. Great, great story, tasteful and timely humor, outrageous FX's, seamless CGI, and on top of it...Kirsten Dunst. What else could I ask for.

The big ending blew me away, since I was not expecting the final twist at all.

Sam Raimi, has done a masterpiece, one to be used as a benchmark for future film makers.

So I tried the new Coca Cola C2, and I have to say that It did not live to my expectations. I am a big Diet Coke (CocaCola Light) drinker and I sincerely was looking forward to try this new version. I almost converted to the new diet coke with lime, and I buy it from time to time. Anyhow.. I did not like the C2 period.

But the new C2, tasted somehow plastic and left some sort of after taste in my mouth. I guess CocaCola has a big challenge in front of them.

I found this link to an incredible mp3 of a hip hop song recorded using a Commodore 64. The sound is so amazingly electronic circa 84 that it sent me back to my childhood room where I used to play and have fun with my own C64 before jumping to my Apple IIc.

Then I started to browse the web to see where the Commodore lovers were doing and found some great emulators, games and FAQ's.

How cool it was to actually save files on a cassette!!!. I am about to install my emulator and play some games and enjoy 64K at its best.

Do not forget he's also busy recording the new U2 album coming in early 2005 maybe even earlier and a world tour to promote it.

Now and after amassing millions of dollars during almost 20 years in the music business, Bono decides to join a venture capital firm from silicon valley, perfectly named Elevation Partners...how sweet.

I have always said that Bono is in a league of his own and with this last move I hope it sends a message to other rock stars wannabe's in how to stay atop your game and keep the money making money.

What I like the most about this new venture is that the firm has good people from both the music, video gaming industry and computing with Bono a guy from Electronic Arts and another from Apple. Very nice mix.

No Eurocup in the US

It is painfull not to be able to see any of the Eurocup 2004 soccer matches here in the US. Not a single game so far. I had to rely on TVE (Official Spanish TV) to see highlights from the the matches.

I think the Europcup is the second best soccer tournament after the actual world cup, so why american networks or cable channels did not bother to buy rights to the games?. Not even Telemundo or Univision cared to even broadcast a match.

I heard that in california you can actually see it on PPV (pay per view), costing $15 per game.... nice uh?

Here is my conspiracy theory....I guess the MLS is hoping that the Europcup would not take viewers from their struggling season, and managed to lobby sportscasters not to broadcast the european socces fest.

So if you know a way to actually see a match here in the US, PLEASE write a comment and tell me what to do.

I am sick of Reagan

I totally understand the importance of former US president Ronald Reagan in the development of major world changes. I am barely old enough to remember his days in the White House, and have to agree that the guy had charm and was "the great communicator". I am sorry he had to die and even more due to Parkinson disease.

But here in the US for almost 4 days now everything has to do with Reagan, every news talk show, news program and even sport broadcast has to do with Reagan's death. It seems like the world stopped, like Iraq never existed and that all the problems and issues just went away.

The worst part is that is going to be this way at least until Friday when he will be finally buried after his post mortem US coast to coast tour.

My respects to Mr. Reagan, have nothing against him, but a whole week dedicated to his death in all media is too much for my taste.

Anyway I just helped to raise the awareness of his death with this post, so I guess here are my two cents...

Harry Potter gets Dark

Last Friday I left the movie theatre with a big smile on my face. The last Potter film delivered in more than one level.

This new film directed by Y Tu Mama Tambien's Alfonso Cuaron is by far the best of the series, the fact that the main actors are in their early teens seemed to provide the director with more freedom at portraying it's view on JK Rawlings world.

The film's texture, some sort of black and blue fits perfectly with the mystery and the whole wizardy theme of the movie.

So far the best summer film this year, SpiderMan 2 and The Terminal better deliver to gain that spot.

I am diver, it is one of the things I enjoy more in life. When I had a glimpse of the name of a movie called OPEN WATER I knew it had to deal with some sorts of diving theme.

So I went to the official web site and saw the trailer...WHOA!!! A suspense/horrors flick 100% based on something that could actually happen or even happened to a diver!!!

For me it is chilling to even think that the premise of the movie could even happen to me and my wife on a diving trip.

Anyways the movie has the elements of a good thriller, simple surviving story of a pair of divers in waters full of sharks and some other visiting friends.

On Tuesday I was able to walk the TPC at Las Colinas the golf course where the EDS Byron Nelson golf tournament is played. That day, the admission was free and you could actually walk the course with the golf professionals and see their entire practice round.

At the 16th hole, an uphill par 5, a friend and I saw a foursome approaching the green. Among the players were Jesper Parnevik and Sergio Garcia. They did several approach shots and chipped around 5 balls each from every side of the green.

Once they finished I manage to address Sergio and told him in Spanish "Hey Sergio este es tu fin de semana!!!" (Sergio Dude...this is you weekend!!)He was kind enough to stop and signed an autograph on my friends notebook.

On Saturday I went to the actual tournament and followed Sergio from the 14th hole. He was already leading with a score of 10 under par for the championship.

Well as some you should know, the guy won the Byron Nelson in the easiest play off I have ever seen.

I have to thank Tim my friend who gave me the Sergio autograph on Tuesday saying that he did not like Sergio very much...little did he know Sergio was bound to win the Byron....

Texas it's like a whole other country

Texas feels sometimes like a country different from the USA. That is the main reason behind the Texas tourism office web site, and a group of Texans feels like this should be true. They think that Texas should be liberated from the occupation from the USA.

Basically they are seeking independence from the US, just like the Basque separatist in Spain and even the Chechens.

They are part of The Republic Of Texas. They have an interim government and they also decided to change the state's flag to the one that was used sometime in the 19th. century.

If you want to become a "Texian" (Texans is so "gringo") you just have to leave in the state for 6 months and apply for a citizenship. According to their web site the ceremony is breath taking!!.

I can now believe that the "Republica del Zulia" should be promoted... and I want to be Zulean....

In what seems to be either the boldest move by a marketer or the dumbest move by the current baseball commissioner, starting June 11 all of the baseball bases in Major League Baseball will have the spiderman logo printed on them.

This is the 1st. time any advertising piece is placed inside the actual baseball diamond. Is baseball desperate for money? Is baseball desperate to appeal to the kids that they assume are Spider-Man's fans?

It is also in the works the fact that maybe sometime this year baseball teams would be allowed to place advertisement in the actual uniforms as they do in European Soccer and in organized baseball in the Caribbean.

It is managed by a former right journalist that once he found how bad and evil the conservative media was decided to jump the fence and start discouraging people from believing in media outlets controlled by the right wing.

Maybe it would be a good idea to check it out from time to time...I wonder why most of his complaints come from the FOX news network...Mmmmmmm.........

Coachella Wrap's Up

The Coachella Festival is shaping to be the largest and most interesting music festival in the US. Last night in ended with a live performance by The Cure.

The Line Up was in par with those of the European Festivals like Reading, Benicassin, Glastonbury, among others.

Finally it seems, that US promoters are understanding the concept of the European Spring/Summer music festivals. The best part of all is that the music and bands that played in Coachella are not the ones with airplay in Mtv and even Mtv2.

It is so good to see that Coachella is not a version of the overated Woodstock versions held some years ago, with a line up that simply sucked and did not have anything to do with the concept and ideology of the original Woodstock in 1969.

My favorite band The Pixies played on Saturday and I am expecting to see them anytime soon this year. It may possible happen that both Pixies and Morrissey play at Lollapalooza !!!!

Today I was part of a Promotional event for Mc Donald's at the USA vs. Mexico Soccer Match. The number of Mexicans attending was simply amazing. At one point I felt I was somewhere in Hermosillo, Puebla, Guanajuato, Tolima etc.

The radio station that was part of the event was playing Grupera music and even Cumbia. All the US born kids that did not even spoke Spanish where dressed with the Mexican national team uniform, their faces painted with the Mexican flag and some of them even had their hair colored with Mexican colors.

Inside the stadium the relation was 10:1, so It felt like a home game for the Mexicans. They lost 1:null to the Americans bringing the pre cinco de mayo festivities to an abrupt end.

Sometimes I think that Texas is still a part of Mexico, despite the fact that the land was lost to the "gringos" centuries ago the people stayed, la Raza is still alive and kicking.

Once you get used to live in Texas you realize that things are just bigger here. That is the case with the new GAYLORD TEXAN HOTEL in Grapevine.

Once you enter you feel you are in...let's say in Las Vegas. Why? Because it is a thematic hotel with the whole Texas experience as a backdrop.

It has 1500 rooms all booked for the rest of the year. And inside everything is Texas oriented with a mini riverwalk like the one in San Antonio as well as The Alamo like building.

It is simply amazing. It seems North Texas wants to become a little Orlando.

Yesterday my father in law arrived from Caracas for a flash visit. He kindly bought the daily newspapers so I can get a fresh look at what is being said in the print media.

To my sad surprise the two major morning papers "EL UNIVERSAL" and "EL NACIONAL" are just a handful of pages. It used to be that both had 4 separated sections with more than 70 pages each. The ones I had in my hands yesterday looked and felt like a newspaper from the province and not like the major national newspapers they used to be.

The number of pages and the quantity of the advertising is minimal. The whole newspaper is the size the classifieds section used to be.

This reality check reflects the downward spiral that the country is immerse in. Is there an end? Will the newspapers be forced to keep reducing their size?

Slowly but surely the "bonita" revolution is getting things done.

If John Kerry is not the next US president is his fault.

November's election is going to be one for the ages. Personally I think that the Iraq conflict is exploding in George W Bush hands. What seemed to be an all out victory for the US is evolving into a guerrilla, urban warfare where the US is simply unprepared and not motivated to win.

You do not have to be a hardcore analyst to realize that the US is having an extremely hard time getting Iraq into a democracy. It is sad sometimes to read and listen to the people responsible for the operation. The US army seemed to be perfect and somehow it is lacking resources at this phase of the battle.

This may sound weird but the same plan used by WAL MART trying to enter the German market I think is being used by the US army entering Iraq.

It is general knowledge that WAL MART is having a heck of a time developing its business in Germany. The expatriates are just not willing to learn German and adapting their corporate culture into the German workforce is simply not giving the best results.

In Iraq the US just did not know what to do after winning the occupation. The lack of a fast scenario building is evolving into a free for all; where the ones who managed to do the bigger damage are the ones who gets concessions in the new constitution.

The US marketing oriented culture is just not selling itself in the Iraq and maybe in the rest of the world. Ironic? YES

John Kerry has a once in a lifetime opportunity to take the presidency. Mr. Bush is between a rock and hard place. Only a miracle could take the Iraq conflict out of his resume...as of today it has been a complete failure. The UN is waiting to simply laugh on the fact that the almighty power is just not able to complete its freedom plan.

Kerry has a good poker game in his hands... He is the one to blame if he trash his game.

If I have to mention my favorite artist I definitely would say MORRISSEY. Ever since I discovered The Smiths during my senior year of high school, I found his lyrics and voice to be unique. I have been an avid follower ever since, having in my record collection every CD that The Smiths and Morrissey have legally published.

Next month Mr. Morrissey will release a long awaited album "You are the Quarry" . I have been waiting for this work desperately for the last 7 years. After a soap opera like dealing with record companies the mozzer finally signed with sactuary records and got special treatment by them, bringing to life the reggae oriented ATTACK record label. Morrissey's You are the Quarry will be the 1st. release from this label in years and I expect some other great acts to be released by ATTACK.

The buzz for this album is starting to build up. Almost every respected publication in the music industry is already raving about the new album. NME, Mojo, Spin, among others are already showcasing his comeback. So far the reviews are very good, and some previous bashers of Moz are paying tribute to the quality of the recording.

The resurgence of Morrissey is followed by the announcement by NME that The Smiths was (and is) the most influential band in for the last century beating The Beatles. The momentum is there and it seems Morrissey is trying to cash in.

So I guess a die hard fan like me is looking forward to the success of this new record. I think he deserves more recognition from the industry and understanding from the general public. This guy is somehow weird but nevertheless an outstanding artist, for me simply an ICON.

I will be writing about this a lot...

Producing a Ringtone is as easy as learning to use MSFT Word for the 1st. time. You don't even have to know music to create one. So the cost of producing one is minimal. An MP3 file has a far greater production overhead with it. And the difference in cost to the average Joe is about a dollar in most cases.

What a great business...profit margins are just insane.

Well...on tuesday morning I will be flying about 3 hours to a major US city to have my 3rd. Interview with a major US cellular carrier. This is the 1st. time I am flying to an interview and I do not know what to expect. The position is very interesting and the company is extremely provocative like a good ice cream with melting chocolate as a topping. BUT!!!....

I am really comfortable about living in Dallas...I really like it here and my wife is having a blast working as a bilingual teacher for a public school district. We even have an extremely good group of friends that we managed to get really close in less than a year.

I feel that after the interview I am going to be between a rock and a hard place. What to do? Don't no know for sure. Tomorrow at 2:00 pm I will be selling myself, trying to fit their profile. I know I am goood...but do I wan to be good this time? Time will tell.!!!!

A Jewish businessman in Chicago sent his son to Israel for a year to absorb the culture. When the son returned to Chicago, he said, "Papa, I had a great time in Israel. But, by the way, I converted to Christianity."

Dallas Cup

All of the Venezuelan teams playing at the soccer Dallas Cup lost their games. I guess the tables are turned. I used to be that the kids used to win soccer games and the pros be the lousiest team in South America.

As of today, the Vinotinto team is 4th in the Conmebol qualifiers to the next world cup.

Pure AIR

On Sat. Night I went to see the French duo AIR performing at NOKIA LIVE located in DFW.
The ticket price was originally $32 but a week before the show I received an email with an offer I could not resist. The email said that by calling Ticketmaster I could get the ticket for half the price, I just had to use the password "TALKIE" when talking with the sales representative. What a deal!!!. but I was not able to buy the tickets until the actual day of the show. I went online and I realized that I could not buy the tickets anymore so I freaked out... I had to pay now the full price!!! Hopeless I decided to call TCKMSTRS and had such a wonderful experience... I bought the tickets for $7.50! each. I guess the frenchies weren't doing so well at the box office.

One thing I hate about NOKIA LIVE is the parking. I had to shed $13 for 2 hours of parking. The worst part is that there is simply no option. The place is so secluded from civilization that there is no other place to park. Parking price was twice what I paid for a ticket!! SENSELESS.

The Review.

At 8pm the band from NYC Mosquitos took the stage. I never heard a word from them before. Simply put they sound like Belle & Sebastian with a heavy doses of Brazilian rhythms and a seductive voice from JuJu Stulbach, Jon Marshall Smith doing a masterful job with the keyboard and Chris Root trying to be funny with Juju and play the guitar at the same time. I really enjoyed their performance, I secretly knew that the band chose to open for AIR had to be good.

I was really surprised by them, and their web site is worth taking a look, you can listen to some of their work while visiting.

My wife (as many of them do..) does not dig the music I like. So it took a lot of effort to take her with me. The best review I got from the AIR concert is that SHE loved it!!! Trust me people...for her to say that is a lot.

The venue was not even half full (or half empty?). I have to point out that the sound was out of this world despite some glitches during Alpha Beta Gaga. I never expected the concert to be so good. They went over practically all of the new album Talkie Walkie. I was expecting more from their more experimental album 10,000 Hz Legend which I think is a pure genius work despite awful critics and fans reviews.

The concert is very simple in terms of the way they behave on stage, but there is a good deal of lights that set the mood for their music, a lot of colors a lot of movement and stroboscopic flashes that played with your brain while processing the music.

I wont comment on how good each and every rendition of their work was, but I HAVE to point out their closing La Femme d'Argent...

Forget about the original. I do not have an adjective to describe the musical achievement of it, the bass line, the jamming, all of it. I jump out of my seat at the end. I could not believe what I just experienced.

Do yourself a favor. Go catch and see JB Dunkel and Nicolas Godin playing live, thank me later.

No HELLBOY today

I am starting to get a feeling about posting. I used to work a lot with HTML but since about 5 years I had people doing that for me in my previous jobs.

I was really looking forward to go and see HELLBOY today. I even marked the calendar. I was having lunch with a mate and he got invited to play golf, 45 minutes later I was teeing off. Golf took the rest of the afternoon. NO HELLBOY TODAY.

Tomorrow I am going to see AIR live.

Welcome
I knew it was going to happen... After reading a whole lot of blogs from friends and foes and saying to myself that I would not start my own blog, here I am, here is my 1st. blog post ever. I'm still thinking on what to post and why, but my weird mind tells me It will be pertinent and extremely related on how I see the world around me.

I left my country (Venezuela) almost year ago, running away from the first 21st. Century military dictatorship that I know of. It was hard, you bet it was ,to simply say goodbye to everything you knew, loved and cherished since you were born. But extreme circumstances makes you take extreme decisions.

Destiny placed me and wife here in Texas.
